Alan Tingcombe graduated from the University of Sydney in 1979 and joined Longworth and McKenzie in Sydney as a graduate engineer . He initially worked on heavy industrial projects such as coal mines and power stations. He was selected to be the principal engineer in their Brisbane Office undertaking the detailed design and supervision of the structural shop drawings of the Loy Yang Power Station Precipitators. In 1981 he left Brisbane to join Taylor Thomson Whitting (TTW) in Sydney and worked on a variety of commercial and residential projects.. In 1984 he moved to Canberra to establish the Canberra Office of TTW, becoming a director in 1988, a position he held until he left in June 2000 to establish AWT Consulting Engineers. During his time in Canberra with TTW , Alan helped establish TTW as one of the major structural consultancies in the region.

Since 2000 Alan has developed AWT Consulting Engineers into one of the most respected structural engineering consultancies in Canberra undertaking many of the most significant building projects ever seen in Canberra including the $200M redevelopment of the Canberra Centre and the highly successful Brindabella Business Park at Canberra Airport. Alan has since expanded AWT by opening a Sydney office in 2005 and currently services clients all along the east coast of Australia.

Alan specialises in the development of computer software for the design office which enables fast accurate analysis of all types of structural solutions. This allows more structural options to be evaluated and the selection of the most appropriate design solution adopted.

Alan approaches all design work by obtaining a thorough understanding of the clients needs to produce practical, efficient and cost effective design solutions. To achieve this it is necessary to be an active member of the design team and to be flexible, responsive and to provide a high level of documentation to time and quality.
